Climate Disasters in Italy: Damage to Cultural Heritage

Italy is grappling with climate-related disasters that threaten its cultural heritage. In Sicily, wildfires fueled by soaring temperatures of 46°C have impacted Palermo, leading to the destruction of the 15th-century Convento di Santa Maria di Gesù, although the relics of San Benedetto il Moro were preserved. The Segesta Archaeological Park was also affected, but the Doric Temple and theater survived. Governor Renato Schifani hinted at possible arson. Meanwhile, on July 25, a storm in Milan with winds reaching 100 km/h forced the closure of various museums, including the Civic Planetarium Hoepli and Sforza Castle. By July 27, while Palazzo Reale and other civic museums reopened, the Natural History Museum and Planetarium remained shut. In late July, five regions—Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Sicily, and Veneto—sought a state of emergency.
