Climate Crisis and Indigenous Struggles Frame Global Art Discourse in 2026
Artists around the world are confronting the issues of climate change and its societal effects. At The Armory Show in New York, which concluded on March 8, Georgian artist Tezi Gabunia presented 'Breaking News: The Flooding of the Louvre,' illustrating the museum underwater, inspired by a real flood in the Seine River projected for 2024. Gabunia intends to create a 19-meter version for the Tbilisi Art Fair in May. Starting in 2021, The Armory Show will move to the Javits Center and shift its dates to September 9-12. The Tate Modern in London, which announced a 'climate emergency' on July 17, 2019, plans to reduce energy use by 10% over two years, a goal echoed by other European institutions. Meanwhile, the 2020 Biennale of Art in Australia, titled 'NIRIN,' connects climate issues with Indigenous rights.
