Clemson's Luminetta EV Generates More Energy Than It Uses
The Deep Orange 17 initiative at Clemson University, known as Luminetta, is an electric vehicle prototype that produces more energy than it uses during a standard 24-hour urban commuting period. This project was created by graduate students in Automotive Engineering, in partnership with BMW of North America and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE. The vehicle is equipped with 1,781 photovoltaic cells that capture energy while in motion and when stationary. In a simulated twelve-mile commute, the solar system generated enough extra energy to provide an additional 31 miles of range. Weighing only 550 kilograms (1,212 pounds), the vehicle's lightweight design incorporates structural steel in safety zones, aluminum in other areas, and carbon-fiber components connected by 3D-printed metal joints. Its aesthetics are inspired by the boxfish and BMW's design legacy. Features include regenerative braking, smart torque distribution, and a custom interface for real-time energy monitoring. Luminetta will serve as a research platform at Clemson's CU-ICAR campus in Greenville, South Carolina, with a public showcase scheduled for CES 2027 in Las Vegas. This project innovatively transforms the concept of parked vehicles into energy-generating assets.
