Clément Chéroux explores vernacular photography and avant-garde play in new book

Clément Chéroux's book "Avant l'avant-garde. Du jeu en photographie. 1890-1940" examines the role of play in photography before the historical avant-gardes. Published by Textuel, the volume focuses on vernacular photographic practices from 1890 to 1940 and their later appropriation by avant-garde movements. Chéroux, a noted photography historian, has previously explored similar themes in artpress (issue 416). The book was reviewed in artpress n°428, December 2015, p. 83.
