Clearing's Bowery Debut 'Maiden Voyage' Blends Old and New

Clearing gallery has opened a new 613sqm space on the Bowery in Manhattan, its first exhibition 'Maiden Voyage' running from April 26 to May 21. The show features 24 artists, mixing the gallery's early generation—Harold Ancart, Jacob Kassay, Koenraad Dedobbeleer, Ryan Foerster, Sebastian Black, Loïc Raguénès—with younger talents like Adam Alessi, Matt Copson, Javier Barrios, and Daisy Sheff, plus Peruvian artist Sara Flores (early 70s) who debuted with the gallery in fall 2022. The intimate three-level space contrasts with the former Bushwick truck depot, encouraging artists to adapt scale. Works include Meriem Bennani's 'Guided Tour of a Spill (CAPS Interlude)' (2021) and Lili Reynaud-Dewar's 'Oops, I think I may have lost my lighter...' (2019), alongside Daniel Dewar and Grégory Gicquel's cushioned benches and Hugh Hayden's carved wood rib cages. The gallery, founded by Olivier Babin in 2011 as an artist-run space in Bushwick, now has locations in Brussels (since 2012) and Los Angeles (since 2020).
