Claudio Rotta Loria interview: 'Geometrie di luce' at TOMAV Moresco

The TOMAV gallery in Moresco, Marche, hosts a solo exhibition of Claudio Rotta Loria (b. 1949), titled 'Geometrie di luce. Nei riflessi della riflessione', curated by Antonello Tolve. The show features works from the 'Superfici a interferenza luminosa' cycle, begun in 1968-69. Rotta Loria explains that these works originated as didactic materials exploring structure, texture, and surface in relation to light. They consist of cylindrical cardboard forms with raised modular elements—square, rectangular, or circular—cut and lifted to reveal fluorescent color underneath, creating chromatic refraction and aura effects. The artist describes his shift from figurative art at age 19 in 1968 toward geometric-constructive works, influenced by the broader redefinition of artistic languages. He distinguishes his practice from Arte Programmata by the warmth and sensitivity of his materials, particularly cardboard and paper. The exhibition also includes 'Spazializzazioni di forma elementare', white monochromes where light and shadow articulate structural gradations, and 'Interventi d’ambiente', radical white structures placed in nature interacting with sunlight, shadows, and tides. Critic Michele Bramante has described Rotta Loria's 'Superfici a interferenza luminosa' as a progenitor of artificial intelligence, a notion the artist finds fitting as a 'Ritorno al futuro'.
