Claudio Gobbi Wins BNL Prize at MIA Photo Fair in Milan
Claudio Gobbi, born in Ancona in 1971 and based in Berlin, has won the BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas Prize at MIA Photo Fair in Milan. Presented by We Gallery of Berlin, Gobbi was selected from 15 finalists by a jury that praised his work for its "extraordinary visual and cognitive power of a journey to the borders of Europe, which is both photographic and narrative." The winning photograph is part of the series Ural Studies, the latest chapter of his research project Neither Europe nor Asia, conducted in the Ural region of Russia, historically considered the geographical and cultural boundary between Europe and Asia. The jury included Fabio Castelli (creator and scientific committee member of MIA), Gianluigi Ricuperati (creative director of Domus Academy), Francesca Malgara (MIA Advisory Board member), Daniele De Luigi (curator of Galleria Civica di Modena), and Anna Boccaccio (director of Institutional Relations at BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas). Special mentions were awarded to Jee Young Lee (Opium Gallery) for her sophisticated work on iconic construction, and Brownyn Katz (Officine dell'Immagine) for her remarkable expressive maturity at a young age (born in 1993). The winning photograph will enter BNL's art collection, which comprises over 5,000 works.
