Claudio Gobbi's Photographic Archaeology at Agrigento's Museo Griffo
Claudio Gobbi's exhibition 'La visione trasparente' at the Museo Archeologico Regionale Pietro Griffo in Agrigento reexamines the relationship between photography and archaeology. Curated by Giusy Diana, the show presents 25 photographs that have been acquired by the museum. Gobbi's work draws from archival research and his own shots, exploring how photography can transcend its documentary role to become an autonomous aesthetic act. The project is supported by the Strategia Fotografia 2023 grant from the MIC's Direzione Generale Creatività. A key inspiration is David Friederich's painting 'Junotemple in Agrigent' (now at Museum für Kunst Dortmund), which depicts the Temple of Juno via an 18th-century engraving. Gobbi rephotographs the same view, using techniques like chronotypy to bridge impressionist painting and photography. The exhibition also highlights the museum's architecture by Franco Minissi, a light-filled structure from the late 1970s that resembles a Kubrickian set. The Griffo will soon undergo a renovation by Aldo Accardi, raising questions about preserving its original character.
