Claudio Giovannesi's 'Fiore' selected for Cannes Quinzaine des Réalisateurs
Italian director Claudio Giovannesi, who previously won the Special Jury Prize at the 7th Rome Film Festival for 'Alì ha gli occhi azzurri', has been selected for the 2016 Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at Cannes with his new film 'Fiore'. The film is set in the Casal del Marmo juvenile detention center in Rome, where Giovannesi spent six months as a volunteer to observe young inmates. The story follows a teenage girl, played by newcomer Daphne Scaccia (discovered by the director in a trattoria), who is imprisoned for robbery and falls in love. The cast includes Valerio Mastandrea as the father. Giovannesi, who studied at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Cinecittà under Paolo Virzì, also worked on TV series like 'Gomorra'. The film explores love and redemption within the constraints of prison rules that forbid physical contact between genders.
