Claudia Osborne: From NIDA to Opera Australia, Directing as Iterative Process

Claudia Osborne, who earned her Master of Fine Arts in Directing from NIDA in 2019, has become the first Young Artist Program Director at Opera Australia. Her directing approach, shaped by her NIDA training, emphasizes collaboration and continuous growth over sticking to initial concepts. Osborne believes her creative journey starts with an idea but remains flexible, a method she applies across theatre, opera, and film. At NIDA, under Dr. Benjamin Schostakowski, students engage in 18 months of rigorous study in diverse performance forms. Claudia values the connections she made there, many of which still bolster her work today. In 2024, she wrote and directed her first short film, 'Rash,' which premiered at the Festival des Antipodes in Saint-Tropez and garnered the AFTRS Award for Best Screenplay. This November, she will direct Ravel's opera 'L'Enfant et les Sortilèges' at NIDA, offering a more somber interpretation. NIDA's next postgraduate info session is on 25 August, with applications for the 2027 MFA in Directing due by 28 September.
