Claudia Andujar's Inhotim Gallery Renamed and Reconfigured with Indigenous Artists
The Galeria Claudia Andujar at Instituto Inhotim has been renamed Galeria Claudia Andujar Maxita Yano, meaning 'House of Earth' in Yanomami. This reconfiguration introduces 22 Indigenous artists from South America, including Bolivia, Colombia, Paraguay, and Peru, into a permanent dialogue with Andujar's foundational work. The gallery now houses approximately 300 works: 200 by Andujar and 100 by the newly included artists, with five new commissions involving six artists. The new display maintains the original curatorial sequence but inserts contemporary Indigenous works into each room, with a gray background to distinguish them. Artistic director Julia Rebouças states the shift reflects a new moment for Inhotim, emphasizing sustainability and the essential inclusion of self-represented Indigenous production. The works by Indigenous artists are on loan for at least three years. The gallery's three thematic axes are Indigenous struggle and activism, networks of allies and community achievements, and debates on representation, image, and Indigenous identity. A documentary room traces Andujar's involvement from her first encounter with the Yanomami in 1971 for Realidade magazine to the creation of the Comissão pela Criação do Parque Yanomami in 1978. Andujar, now 94, was present at the reopening.
