Claude Lévêque's 'Human Fly' at Saint-Nazaire Submarine Base

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Claude Lévêque's immersive installation 'Human Fly' opened at Le Life in Saint-Nazaire's submarine base from May 26 to September 29, 2019. The work bombards visitors with stroboscopic lights, metallic crackling sounds, and polished stainless steel bars arranged in bouquets on the floor. The soundscape, created with Yoann Le Claire, originates from a bolt shaken in an Ikea salad bowl. Lévêque was invited by Sophie Legrandjacques, director of Le Grand Café, to intervene in the submarine base's cell 14. The title references The Cramps' 1990 song. The installation uses mirror-polished steel tubes, stroboscopic light programming, and metallic crackling diffusion. Photos by Marc Domage. The work is presented by kamel mennour, Paris/London.
