Claude Cahun: The Avant-Garde Photographer Who Defied Identity

Born Lucy Renée Mathilde Schwob in Nantes in 1894, Claude Cahun was a French surrealist writer and photographer known for her focus on self-portraiture and gender fluidity. Embracing the name Claude Cahun as her authentic identity, she was also referred to as Claude Courlis and Daniel Douglas. Together with her partner Suzanne Malherbe (Marcel Moore), she resided at 70 Rue de Notre-Dame des Champs in Montparnasse, mingling with notable artists such as André Breton, Salvador Dalí, and Man Ray. Cahun's photography featured intricate costumes and masks, crafting scenes that defied conventional norms. In 1938, she relocated to Jersey with Moore, where they became involved in the Resistance during World War II. Arrested in July 1944 and held until May 1945, their home was ransacked, resulting in the loss of much of Cahun's work. After the war, she re-engaged with Breton and Max Ernst but passed away from a pulmonary embolism in 1954, while Moore took her own life in 1972. Cahun's exploration of identity through disguise and performance continues to inspire contemporary artists, despite much of her work being lost.
