Classical music festivals thrive with rare experiences and community focus

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

Despite the closure of major contemporary festivals like BluesFest and Splendour in the Grass, classical music festivals in Australia are thriving. ArtsHub examined four festivals with diverse models. The Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM) moved to Cairns in 2025, aligning with winter and the Great Barrier Reef. Executive Director Ricardo Peach emphasizes artistic vision and strategic location. Ukaria Cultural Centre's Chamberfest, founded by Ulrike Klein, curates five concerts over a weekend in a 220-seat venue. CEO Alison Beare highlights the unique model of inviting international curators. 4MBS Festival of Classics in Brisbane, directed by Gary Thorpe, focuses on community and local performers, growing from 6 to 24 concerts. The Orange Chamber Music Festival (OCMF), founded by Carmen Nieves in 2021, uses diverse venues and integrates with local food and wine. Key success factors include rare experiences, location, community needs, and sustainable growth.
