Classical Music Attracts Younger Audiences Through Cross-Genre Mashups and Social Media

Younger generations are increasingly drawn to classical music, as orchestras across the U.S. observe heightened interest from Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen X. The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) indicates that more than half of its audience belongs to these age groups, thanks to initiatives such as the Playlist series. SLSO President Marie-Hélène Bernard emphasizes the importance of authentic experiences. Under the direction of Stéphane Denève, the orchestra has partnered with Steve Hackman to create cross-genre compositions. Their influencer efforts have garnered over 10 million views, with TikTok's Tani Lior achieving 11 million. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Philharmonic reports that 63% of its audience falls within these demographics, supported by programs like YOLA, which offers free training. A 2022 survey revealed that 65% of individuals under 35 regularly listen to orchestral music.
