Clara Drummond Wins 2016 BP Portrait Award with £30,000 Prize

Clara Drummond, a Scottish-born artist, has been named the winner of the 2016 BP Portrait Award. Her painting Girl in a Liberty Dress earned her the £30,000 prize. Drummond had previously been shortlisted for the award in both 2013 and 2014. In addition to the cash prize, she will receive a £5,000 commission to be determined by the National Portrait Gallery trustees. The second prize of £10,000 went to Chinese artist Bo Wang, while Benjamin Sullivan received the third prize of £8,000. Jamie Coreth won the BP Young Artist Award, which comes with £7,000, for his work Dad Sculpting Me. The judging panel was chaired by Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery. Other judges included Christopher Baker, Director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery; writer Alan Hollinghurst; Sarah Howgate, Contemporary Curator at the National Portrait Gallery; artist Jenny Saville; and Des Violaris, Director of UK Arts & Culture at BP.
