Claire Tabouret: Painting as Resistance and Identity Exploration

artist · 2026-04-23

Claire Tabouret, born in 1981 and living in Pantin, is a French artist whose work delves into solitude, identity, and the memory of places. Winner of the Yishu 8 Prize in 2012, she has exhibited at the Maison des Arts de Pékin and Galerie Isabelle Gounod in Paris. Tabouret's painting process is intuitive and layered, using acrylics to create patinated, aged surfaces with deep blues, greens, and grays. During a residency in Beijing, she produced a series of self-portraits in ink on rice paper, inspired by a quote from Japanese novelist Yoko Tawada about the body's water composition. These portraits explore identity as a fluid, androgynous territory. Her solo show "L'île" at Galerie Isabelle Gounod (2012) featured works from a Marseille residency, where she documented how places hold memory. The Arab Spring influenced her paintings, merging contemporary events with art historical references like Géricault's "The Raft of the Medusa." One painting depicts a Harki migrant from archival footage, emphasizing physical presence and determination. Since 2008, her "Maisons inondées" series uses felt-tip pen to create floating houses, questioning the notion of shelter. Tabouret holds degrees in philosophy and art history.
