Claire Fontaine's Feminist Installation 'Il Personale' at Elica Headquarters

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The artist duo Claire Fontaine, composed of Fulvia Carnevale and James Thornhill, created a site-specific light installation titled 'Il Personale' for the headquarters of Elica in Fabriano, Italy. The work was developed through a workshop called 'Lavoro femminile visibile e invisibile' with 30 female managers from the company, as part of the XXI Premio Ermanno Casoli, an award by Fondazione Ermanno Casoli. The installation features the phrase 'Il personale è politico' in block letters, a translation of Carol Hanisch's 1970 slogan 'The personal is political,' which in Italian carries a double meaning: 'personal' as intimate and 'personnel' as employees. The project aimed to address women's empowerment and the difficulty of balancing professional and family life. A documentary video by Anton Giulio Onofri captures the participants' reflections. Claire Fontaine is also currently exhibiting 'Ready Made Emotions' at Galleria t293 in Rome. The duo is known for the phrase 'Pensati Libera,' used by Maria Grazia Chiuri on a stole worn by Chiara Ferragni at Sanremo.
