Ciro Battiloro on Photography, Intimacy, and Silent Resistance

Ciro Battiloro, a documentary photographer born in Torre del Greco in 1984, explores the theme of intimacy as a quiet form of resistance. He studied philosophy at the University of Naples Federico II and has participated in various artist residencies, exhibitions, and festivals. His book, "Silence is a Gift," released by Chose Commune in Marseille in 2024, was a finalist for the Paris Photo Aperture Book Award that same year. His solo exhibition, "Lo spazio del silenzio," featured around 50 uncaptioned black-and-white analog photos at Palazzo Grillo in Genoa, curated by Laura Garbarino and Gianni Martini. Battiloro’s work includes projects in Rione Sanità in Naples and fishing communities in Normandy, and he’s currently focusing on Torre del Greco, using photography to capture body language while emphasizing the humanity of marginalized groups. His approach, inspired by Lisetta Carmi, avoids shock; instead, it radiates empathy and warmth. He has received accolades like the Langhe Photo Prize and the Grand Prix MAP.
