Circulation(s) 2021: Young European Photography Goes Online

festival-fair · 2026-04-24

The 11th edition of the Festival Circulation(s) is being held at Centquatre in Paris until May 2, 2021, but due to the venue's closure to the public, the entire festival has moved online, with guided tours and social media spotlights. This year's edition honors Portugal and features 33 European artists, showcasing a new generation of photographers. Dominant themes include female intimacy, as seen in Chiara Cordeschi's 'Be a Woman' (2018), a series of performative self-portraits examining pivotal life events; Karolina Cwik's 'Don't Look at Me' (2016-20), a five-year chronicle of motherhood's fatigue; Varya Kozhevnikova's '13.31' (2019), exploring the thin line between similarity and difference with her 13-year-old daughter; and Nina Franco's 'Sobre (viver)' (2019), an installation using red wool and iron nails to address domestic violence and feminicide. Environmental concerns are also prominent: Lucas Castel & Mathilde Mahoudeau's 'Deuxième saison' (2018-20) documents the potential reopening of a tungsten mine in Ariège, France; Inka & Niclas's 'Family Portraits' (2018-20) critiques contemporary travel and landscape consumption through reflective clothing; and Joanne Joho & Thomas Lopes's 'All-Inclusive' (2019) presents dystopian alpine and Jura landscapes, projecting a future of mass tourism and ecological collapse.
