Cinema da Casa: cult films projected on building facades during quarantine

digital · 2026-04-27

During Italy's COVID-19 lockdown, balconies became stages for collective performances. Now Rome has launched Cinema da Casa, an initiative that projects classic films onto building facades, reviving early cinema's open-air screenings. Organized by Alice nella città, the festival accompanying Fondazione Cinema per Roma, it calls on residents to illuminate cities with their favorite films by opening windows and using everyday spaces as screens. The project started in Rome and spread to Florence, Bologna, Bari, and international cities. Each night at 10 PM, film clips appear on walls, including scenes from Nuovo cinema paradiso (Giuseppe Tornatore), Modern Times (Charlie Chaplin), Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), and Pulp Fiction (John Travolta, Uma Thurman, directed by Quentin Tarantino). The initiative uses hashtags #AliceNellaCittà #Alice2020 #Apriamolefinestre #CinemadaCasa. Artribune also recommends streaming platforms, free artist films, and Sky Arte content for home projection.
