Cindy Sherman's New Photographs at Gagosian Paris Feature Volcanic Landscapes

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Cindy Sherman's exhibition at Gagosian Gallery Paris (September 14 – October 10, 2012) presents a new series where the artist places herself in digitally manipulated volcanic landscapes from Capri, Stromboli, and Iceland. Unlike her earlier works, where backgrounds were minimal, these environments are imposing and recall paintings by Millet and Turner. Sherman appears in lavish designer gowns (Chanel, Lagerfeld) without prosthetics or heavy makeup, confronting the hostile scenery. The figures, though central, now compete with the landscape for attention, marking a departure from her previous focus solely on character. Catherine Francblin reviews the show for artpress.
