Cindy Sherman Effect Show at Kunstforum Vienna
The Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien presents 'The Cindy Sherman Effect', an exhibition curated by Bettina Busse that explores Sherman's influence on contemporary art. The show features 21 artists from different generations, including Sophie Calle, Sarah Lucas, Pipilotti Rist, Ryan Trecartin, Wu Tsang, and Martine Gutierrez. Rather than a chronological survey, the exhibition is organized thematically, pairing Sherman's Disaster Series with works by Gavin Turk and Douglas Gordon, and her engagement with television and cinema with Ryan Trecartin's exploration of social media and identity. A highlight is Monica Bonvicini's site-specific installation 'Pas de Deux', created for the show after her 2006 work 'Identity Protection' could not be installed. The exhibition includes Sherman's iconic 'Untitled Film Still n. 2, 1977' from her series of seventy black-and-white photographs. Busse selected works to show the development of Sherman's technique, from the simple 'Busriders' (1976) to later detailed pieces. The show runs until July 19, 2020, at the Kunstforum in Vienna.
