CIAP Vassivière Opens Calls for Artists and Critics Residencies

The Centre International d'Art et du Paysage (CIAP) on the île de Vassivière in France has announced two open calls for residencies in 2017. One call targets art historians, critics, and theorists to conduct research on the institution's wooden sculpture collection, which includes 60 works by artists such as Gilles Clément, Victor Man, Olivier Mosset, Michaël Sailstorfer, Erik Samakh, and Oscar Tuazon. The residency runs from April 10 to July 28, 2017, with the goal of expanding the center's activities beyond the island and rethinking the sculpture park model in relation to contemporary rural contexts. The second call is for artists of any age or nationality, focusing on the European migrant and refugee crisis, migration policies, integration, and hospitality in rural settings. Artists must submit a research project to be developed at CIAP, with the residency from April 10 to June 30, 2017. The deadline for both calls is March 19, 2017. CIAP is housed in a postmodern building designed by Aldo Rossi and Xavier Fabre in the late 1980s, featuring a lighthouse tower and a rectilinear gallery overlooking the Vassivière artificial lake. Notable past residents include Pierre Bismuth, Yona Friedman, Cyprien Gaillard, Thomas Hirschhorn, Joseph Kosuth, Bertrand Lavier, Claude Lévêque, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Gregor Schneider, and Tino Sehgal.
