Chto Delat Collective's Canary Archives Responds to Russia's 2022 Invasion of Ukraine

artist · 2026-04-19

The Chto Delat collective, also known as What is to be done?, created the Canary Archives in March 2022 as a direct reaction to Russia's military assault on Ukraine. This artwork includes a four-channel video installation and a newspaper issue, with its development accelerated by the invasion. Filming and written components were heavily altered following the outbreak of war. Initiated earlier, the project gained urgency from the conflict. Over a year later, its significance persists. Yulia Tikhomirova authored the piece for ARTMargins Online, which features artist profiles and exhibition reviews. The work is documented on the collective's website, accessed in January 2023.
