Chronos: An AI Co-Historian for Automating Historical Research
AI is increasingly used in scientific discovery, but historical research has lagged due to a lack of specialized tools. Researchers introduce Chronos, an AI Co-Historian that lets historians create and customize workflows via natural-language interaction and share them as Chronos-Extensions. The first extension, Chronos-Extract, automates targeted information extraction from image scans of historical sources. It was benchmarked on three historical source corpora, achieving high task-accuracy across primary sources spanning three centuries. This development addresses historians' need for a specialized, non-technical, highly customizable tool with extensive task evaluation.
