Christopher Myers' Textile Installation Transforms Birmingham Museum of Art Lobby

The Birmingham Museum of Art (BMA) has unveiled 'Wall to Wall: Christopher Myers', the fifth installment of its ongoing Wall to Wall series. The centerpiece is a monumental textile installation titled 'The Slow Can Beat the Quick', created specifically for the museum by New York-based artist and writer Christopher Myers. The work transforms the museum's lobby, drawing inspiration from Birmingham's histories of steel, labor, and land. Jade Powers, Hugh Kaul Curator of Contemporary Art, noted that this is the first textile installation commissioned for the series, and it demonstrates how textiles can hold history, memory, and identity, making the lobby a space that is monumental yet intimate and deeply connected to Birmingham's past and present. Myers's multidisciplinary practice is grounded in storytelling, exploring the space between history and contemporary experience. The installation is on view at the BMA, marking a significant addition to the museum's contemporary art program.
