Christo's Floating Piers on Lake Iseo Completed
The Floating Piers, a temporary walkway by Christo on Lake Iseo, Italy, has been completed after nearly a year of construction. Monte Isola mayor Fiorello Turla posted photos of the finished structure on Facebook. Since August 2015, workers have installed 200,000 high-density polyethylene cubes to form the floating platform, anchored with pins and ropes to the lakebed. The iconic yellow-orange fabric covering will be laid in the final three to four days before the official opening on June 18, 2016, closing on July 3. The fabric, produced in Germany, covers 90,000 square meters and will be arranged to simulate wave ripples. The walkway spans 4.5 kilometers, connecting Sulzano to Monte Isola and Monte Isola to the private island of San Paolo, with two branches. An additional 1.5 kilometers of pedestrian path links Peschiera Maraglio and Sensole. Christo stated on Facebook that the walkway is free, open 24 hours, and requires no tickets or reservations.
