Christo's 300 signed multiples auctioned for Bangui hospital at GAMeC

market-auction · 2026-05-05

On June 22, 2016, during the run of The Floating Piers, GAMeC in Bergamo hosted a charity auction of 300 signed and numbered multiples by Christo, each priced at €1,000, to fund a pediatric hospital in Bangui, Central African Republic. The multiples are replicas of Christo's Box, a limited edition containing six documentaries on the Vatican Museums produced by Centro Televisivo Vaticano and Officina della Comunicazione, presented by Alberto Angela. Christo wrapped the box, partially veiling a detail from Raphael's School of Athens—the eyes of a young man identified as a cousin of Pope Julius II. The original box was donated to the Vatican Secretariat. The auction was attended by GAMeC director Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, museum director M. Cristina Rodeschini, Bergamo mayor Giorgio Gori, and Bianca Arrivabene, Vice President Italy of Christie's.
