Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Two People, One Artist
Alessandra Mammì reflects on the partnership of Christo and Jeanne-Claude following Christo's death in 2020. Jeanne-Claude, born in Casablanca in 1935 to a French general and an exuberant mother, studied Latin and philosophy in Tunis and earned a diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1958, she met Christo, a Hungarian painter born the same day (June 13, 1935). Despite family pressure to marry another, she became pregnant by Christo, married him, and then fled after the honeymoon. For years she was known as Mme. Christo, managing finances and permits while he created. However, from 1994 onward, their projects were co-signed as Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Christo acknowledged that nearly all outdoor works since 1961 were collaborative, but the market favored a single male artist's name. Jeanne-Claude died in 2009 in New York from an aneurysm after a fall. Christo continued their work alone, still signing as Christo and Jeanne-Claude, as seen in The Floating Piers on Lake Iseo. The article argues that Jeanne-Claude was an equal partner, citing her role in early installations, the color choices for works like Surrounded Islands (pink nylon skirts around Biscayne Bay islands), and the 1967 performance Wedding Dress. The piece challenges the traditional 'femme d'artiste' narrative, comparing her to Charlotte Perriand, Dora Maar, and Sonia Delaunay, who were long overshadowed by their male partners.
