Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Wrapped Arc de Triomphe Realizes 60-Year Dream in Paris

The Arc de Triomphe in Paris has been wrapped by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, completing a project first conceived in 1961. President Emmanuel Macron inaugurated the installation alongside Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The project was financed entirely through private funds, including €14 million from auction sales of the artists' works. Installation required 25,000 square meters of fabric secured by 3 kilometers of red rope, deployed by 95 steeplejacks over 16 days. Approximately 300 invigilators, including students and professionals like Ekaterina, Emma, and Genevieve, monitor the site for €12 per hour. The fabric features blue on one side and aluminum-coated grey on the other, with the red ropes and eventual blue wear creating a tricolor effect reminiscent of the French flag. The wrapped monument has sparked public debate, though less intense than previous controversies like Renzo Piano's Centre Pompidou or Daniel Buren's Palais Royal installation. Visitors can access the pedestrianized plaza on Sundays, while weekdays require tunnel access. The materials are fully recyclable, with each square meter coated in one kilogram of aluminum. The wrapping evokes various interpretations, from elephantine forms to haute couture drapery, while also recalling the monument's military origins and France's national identity. The installation will remain for a limited period before being dismantled.
