Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Land Art in Three Archival Videos

artist · 2026-05-05

Artribune has published a compilation of three archival videos documenting the major environmental works of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, whose collaborative role was publicly acknowledged only in 1994. The first video, edited by Antonio Ferrera for the 2010 Independent Curators International's Leo Award—named after their gallerist Leo Castelli—showcases projects such as Valley Curtain (Colorado, 1970), Running Fence (California, 1972–76), Surrounded Islands (Miami, 1983), the wrapping of the Pont Neuf in Paris (1984) and the Reichstag in Berlin (1995), the Japanese umbrellas (1984–91), the wrapped trees of Basel, and The Gates in Central Park (2005). The second video, produced by Tate London for its Lost Art series, focuses on the Reichstag installation with archival footage and a 2015 interview with Christo. The third, from Smithsonian Magazine's YouTube channel, documents Running Fence, a project that required nearly four years of negotiations with the state and ranch owners. The article was written by Valentina Tanni, an art historian and curator specializing in art and technology.
