Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 1983 Surrounded Islands installation in Miami detailed alongside a recipe by Alain Passard

The April 2026 issue of Beaux Arts Magazine features a recipe by chef Alain Passard, inspired by the monumental, ephemeral installations of artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Known for wrapping landmarks like Paris's Pont-Neuf and Berlin's Reichstag, the artist duo created Surrounded Islands in 1983, encircling eleven islands in Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida, with 600,000 square meters of bright pink polypropylene fabric. This floating, 11.3-kilometer-long pink carpet was visible from land, bridges, and air, funded entirely through sales of their preparatory drawings, lithographs, collages, and earlier works, bypassing traditional art market constraints. Over 40 tons of debris were cleared during preparations. The installation is part of a legacy that includes projects in Sydney, Colorado, Ibaraki, Japan, and California, with floating platforms on Italy's Lake Iseo. Christo (1935–2020) and Jeanne-Claude (1935–2009) aimed to reveal site beauty through concealment. Passard's recipe, included in the magazine, involves ingredients like beets, peas, and potatoes, paired with a 2023 Château Bouscaut white wine from Graves.
