Christo and Jeanne-Claude Exhibition Opens at Uruguay's MACA Museum
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry (MACA) in Punta del Este, Uruguay, is presenting a major exhibition of works by Christo and Jeanne-Claude until April 30. This marks the first time the iconic duo's work has been shown in Uruguay. The exhibition features over 50 pieces, including photographs, drawings, collages, and sculptures, offering a comprehensive overview of their monumental public art projects. These projects, such as Valley Curtain (1972) in Colorado, Surrounded Islands (1983) in Miami's Biscayne Bay, The Umbrellas (1991) in California and Japan, and The Gates (2005) in New York's Central Park, are documented alongside planning materials like environmental impact reports and diagrams. The show highlights their process, where the bureaucratic and planning stages were integral to the artistic work. A bilingual Spanish-English catalogue featuring an intimate interview with Christo and images of all exhibited works will be produced. Concurrently, in an annex building until April 18, the museum is hosting 'Heliógrafos,' an exhibition of 27 heliographic prints by Argentine artist León Ferrari, created during his exile in São Paulo. The MACA, designed by architect Carlos Ott and inaugurated in January 2022, is part of the Fundación Atchugarry, founded in 2007 by artist Pablo Atchugarry to house his Latin American painting and sculpture collection. The museum contains four exhibition halls and a 72-seat auditorium/cinema.
