Christine Sun Kim Creates Monumental ASL Video Installation for MMCA x LG OLED Series

exhibition · 2026-04-19

Christine Sun Kim is set to unveil a significant animated video installation at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) on July 31, as part of the MMCA x LG OLED collaboration. This installation will be displayed during Seoul Art Week in September. Utilizing her unique graphic notation system, Kim will interpret American Sign Language through innovative shapes and symbols, drawing inspiration from motion lines found in cartoons and comics to express sound and movement. Her artistic approach, rooted in the politics of sound, reflects her experiences as a Deaf artist and often incorporates musical notation and ASL across various mediums. The installation will comment on the current fragmented political landscape and the challenges of communication in the digital era, which she describes as akin to "the sensation of arguing with a rock." MMCA director Kim Sung-hee remarked to The Korea Times that Kim's work offers a thought-provoking exploration of language and society, inviting diverse interpretations. Launched in 2025, the MMCA x LG OLED initiative commissions large-scale, site-specific artworks that utilize LG's OLED technology, transforming the MMCA's central exhibition space, Seoul Box, into a fusion of art and advanced screen media. Kim's work is characterized by its social critique and humor.
