Christine Rebet and Peter Granser at Galerie Kamel Mennour, Paris

At Galerie Kamel Mennour in Paris, from November 17 to December 30, 2006, a dual exhibition paired French artist Christine Rebet's surrealist-inspired works with Austrian photographer Peter Granser's contemporary Coney Island images. Rebet's show, titled Tiger Escape, draws on the 1904 Dreamland amusement park fire at Coney Island, blending drawings, video, and sound animation into dreamlike, ambiguous narratives. Her animated film Tell me about your dreams features a woman on a lounger and a tiger-headed psychoanalyst against a fire backdrop. Granser's photographs depict a banal, almost empty Coney Island, focusing on ordinary moments rather than spectacle, with hyperreal, slightly overexposed images. His style echoes the 'ordinary' aesthetic of the 1990s, reflecting on photography's exhausted possibilities. The exhibition juxtaposes past trauma and present reality, dream and realism.
