Christine Macel Appointed Artistic Director for 2017 Venice Biennale

institutional · 2026-04-20

Christine Macel, chief curator at Paris's Centre Pompidou, will lead the 57th Venice Biennale scheduled from 13 May to 26 November 2017. She takes over from Okwui Enwezor, whose 2015 edition focused on global divisions. Macel's approach will highlight artists' capacity to create personal worlds and bring vitality to contemporary life, according to Biennale president Paolo Baratta. Her extensive curatorial career includes overseeing the French Pavilion in 2013 featuring Anri Sala and the Belgian Pavilion in 2007 with Eric Duyckaerts. At the Centre Pompidou since 2000, she has organized solo exhibitions for artists like Sophie Calle, Philippe Parreno, Gabriel Orozco, and Anri Sala. Previously, she served as a curator and inspector in the visual arts department of the French Ministry of Culture starting in 1995. Macel also contributes to art publications including Artforum, Flash Art, Parkett, and Art Press. The announcement was made on 25 January 2016.
