Christie's to sell Jan van Huysum masterpieces estimated at £3 million each
Two rare paintings by Jan van Huysum, the 18th-century Dutch master known as 'the Phoenix of Flower Painters,' will lead Christie's Old Masters Evening Sale on 30 June 2026 in London. The works—'Fruit and flowers in a wicker basket' (1720s) and 'Flowers in a terracotta vase' (1734)—are each estimated at around £3 million. Van Huysum was famed for his secretive technique and role in reviving realism in Dutch painting. The tightly-packed, sumptuous displays of fruits and flowers celebrated nature and served as displays of wealth. When last sold over twenty years ago, they achieved record prices.
