Christie's Thinking Italian Milan achieves 94% sold lots and 99% value in 2019 auction

Christie's achieved 94% of lots sold and 99% of value sold during its Milan Art Week 2019 auctions, comprising the Evening Sale on April 3 and the Day Sale on April 4. The top lot was Giorgio Morandi's 1952 'Natura Morta', sold online for €1,570,000. Mario Schifano's 1964 'Particolare di propaganda' fetched €634,000, while Ubaldo Oppi's 'Giovani donne al mare' set a record at €200,000. The total result was €13,932,875, slightly below the previous year. Renato Pennisi, Director and Senior Specialist of Modern and Contemporary Art at Christie's, noted the auction's success reflects rigorous quality selection and growing international interest, with buyers from 20 countries. The auction also included a group of nine works benefiting Water Academy SRD, a scientific and educational institution promoting water resource awareness. Pennisi highlighted the return to figuration in art, with Christie's creating thematic focuses on early 20th-century artists like the Scuola romana and Realismo magico.
