Christie's Online Auction of Picasso Ceramics Includes Rita Hayworth Wedding Set
Christie's is holding an online auction of approximately ninety Picasso ceramics until October 29, with a physical exhibition at its King Street location in London from October 22. The highlight is a set of 13 'Visage Noir' plates from 1948, estimated at £40,000–70,000. This set, one of only a few complete sets remaining, was a wedding gift from the village of Vallauris to Rita Hayworth and Prince Ali Khan in 1949. Picasso began working with ceramics in Vallauris in August 1946 after meeting Suzanne Ramié at a local craft exhibition. Their collaboration lasted 25 years. In June 2013, Christie's set a record for Picasso ceramics with a vase sold for £980,275 and achieved a 100% sell-through rate for a dedicated ceramics auction.
