Christie's Marks 65 Years in Italy with Two Online Sales
Christie's celebrates its 65th anniversary in Italy with two online auction sessions in Milan. The 20th/21st Century: Milan Online Sale runs from May 17 to 31, featuring works by Boetti, Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Schifano, Sam Francis, and Warhol, alongside emerging artists. The Centuries of Beauty – A Refined Private Collection sale follows from May 24 to June 7, offering about 120 lots from a prestigious Italian private collection spanning Old Masters to 21st-century art, ceramics, and design. Exhibitions are held at Palazzo Clerici in Milan (May 24-27) and previews at Hotel de Russie in Rome (May 9-10). Elena Zaccarelli, Senior Specialist and Head of Sale for Post-War & Contemporary Art in Milan, notes that online auctions have expanded international participation: buyers came from 44 countries in 2022 versus 13 in 2018. Millennials accounted for 20% of bidders in 2022, up from 7% in 2018. Lots start at €100 with no reserve. Christie's also plans a 'Thinking Italian' event in Paris in October alongside Paris Plus fair.
