Christie's London March 2026 Sales: Moore, Kandinsky, Magritte Lead
Christie's London will hold a series of modern and contemporary art auctions starting March 5, 2026, featuring over 800 lots. The 20th/21st Century: London Evening Sale is led by Henry Moore's 'King and Queen' (1952-53, est. £10-15 million), offered for the first time after 70 years in a single collection, and Wassily Kandinsky's 'Le rond rouge' (1939, est. £10.5-15.5 million), previously owned by the artist and his widow Nina Kandinsky, later handled by Galerie Maeght, exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum and the 1986 Venice Biennale, and on long-term loan to the Courtauld Gallery from 2002 to 2018. Gerhard Richter's 'Schober (Haybarn)' (1984, est. £6-9 million), acquired from Marian Goodman Gallery by collectors Emily and Jerry Spiegel, MoMA patrons, also features. The 25th edition of The Art of the Surreal Evening Sale on the same day includes René Magritte's 'Les grâces naturelles' (c. 1961, est. £6.5-9.5 million), previously at the Magritte Museum in Brussels; Paul Delvaux's 'La Ville lunaire' (1944, est. £2-3 million) from a 50-year collection; and Dorothea Tanning's 'Children's Games' (1942, est. £1-2 million), shown at the 1943 'Exhibition by 31 Women' at Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century gallery. A single-owner sale, Modern Visionaries: The Roger and Josette Vanthournout Collection, features Magritte's 'La plaine de l'air' (1940, est. £3.5-5.5 million), acquired by the couple in 1968.
