Christie's London Auctions: Modern, Contemporary, and Surrealist Art

Christie's London will hold two major auctions on February 28, 2023, at its King Street location. The 20th/21st Century: London Evening Sale features 66% of lots making their auction debut, including works by Pablo Picasso (Femme dans un rocking-chair (Jacqueline), 1956, estimated £15-20 million), Paul Cézanne, Giorgio Morandi, Lucio Fontana, Gerhard Richter, Cecily Brown, Cristina Banban, Caroline Walker, and German Expressionists Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Erich Heckel. The subsequent The Art of Surreal Evening Sale is led by René Magritte's Le Retour and includes Memory of a Surreal Journey, a collection of 25 works from a California collection featuring Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Dorothea Tanning, and Leonor Fini—pioneers of surrealism highlighted at the Venice Biennale's 'La culla della strega' exhibition. Giovanna Bertazzoni, Christie's vice president of 20th/21st Century art, described the selection as vibrant and diverse, bridging contemporary artists with their predecessors.
