Christie's and Hyundai Card Present 'Heads On: Basquiat & Warhol' in Seoul

exhibition · 2026-04-27

During Seoul's art week, concurrent with Kiaf and Frieze Seoul fairs running until September 9, Christie's in collaboration with Hyundai Card has opened a celebratory exhibition titled 'Heads On: Basquiat & Warhol' at Storage, Hyundai Card's contemporary art center in Seoul. The show explores the historic friendship and collaboration between Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, initiated by gallerist Bruno Bischofberger in the early 1980s. This partnership has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, including the recent 'Warhol Haring Basquiat' at Palazzo Belloni in Bologna (concluded in June) and the successful 'Basquiat x Warhol, à quatre mains' at Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. Christie's choice is strategically commercial, given strong Asian collector interest: Basquiat holds the record for the most expensive Western artwork sold in Asia, and Warhol's market in the region is robust. Examples include a pink Marilyn (1979-1986) sold for HKD 10 million (approx. €1.2 million) at Christie's Hong Kong 20th/21st Century Art Evening Sale, and Dollar Sign (1981) exceeding HKD 50 million (approx. €6 million) at Christie's 20th Century: Hong Kong to New York in 2020. The exhibition serves as a strategic spotlight on both artists ahead of the second-half market season.
