Christian Waldvogel's Conceptual Adventures at Exhibition
Swiss artist Christian Waldvogel delves into imaginative themes of geography and astronomy through his installations. His piece, West Pole (2005/2013), introduces a conceptual West Pole situated 'in the middle and the centre of night', depicted with a lamp, a disc representing Earth, and a night image of Hong Kong harbour. An architect by training, Waldvogel is acclaimed for Globus Cassus (2004–), an open-source initiative that envisions Earth as a hollow megastructure, which showcased Switzerland at the 2004 Venice architecture biennale and earned a gold medal at the Leipzig Book Fair. In another work, The Earth Turns Without Me (2009–11), he captured a stationary sun using a pinhole camera while flying west in a supersonic jet at Earth's rotational speed, with artifacts displayed in a vitrine. His playful approach stands in contrast to Dutch artist Guido van der Werve's The Day I Didn’t Turn With the World (2007). The exhibition also references Dora Garcia's ongoing project Forever (2004–) under surveillance. Waldvogel’s unconventional installations prioritize poetic ideas over traditional notions of success.
