Christian Marclay's 'The Clock' Returns to LACMA: An Interview on Time, Cinema, and Experience

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is showcasing Christian Marclay's significant 24-hour video installation, 'The Clock,' until August 23, 2026. This marks its first return to Los Angeles since 2015. In a recent interview, Marclay elaborated on the work's lasting significance, its connection to Los Angeles, and the complex creation process. He characterizes 'The Clock' as more of an experience than a traditional film, akin to performance art that engages viewers. By aligning thousands of film and television clips with real local time, it acts as both a clock and a reflection on cinema, memory, and mortality. Marclay highlights that audiences often remain for extended periods, drawn in by the interplay of their lives and the narratives displayed. The selection process for clips took three years with a team of research assistants, emphasizing the importance of transitions for viewer engagement. The installation also serves as a 'memento mori,' as many featured actors have since passed away, underscoring the theme of aging. Comfortable couches are provided for visitors, who are encouraged to come and go. A special 24-hour screening will conclude the exhibition, starting Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 7 pm.
