Christian Bernard, Founding Director of MAMCO Geneva, Dies at 76
Christian Bernard, the founding director of MAMCO – Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Genève, died on 6 August 2026 at the age of 76, as announced by the museum with great sadness. A prominent figure in contemporary culture in both France and Switzerland, Bernard was born in Strasbourg and began his journey in the art scene through Surrealism during the 1960s. He managed Villa Arson from 1986 until 1994 and established MAMCO in 1991, serving as its director from 1994 to 2015. Bernard showcased over 800 artists and left a lasting impact on the Franco-Swiss art community. Following his time at MAMCO, he curated the Printemps de Septembre festival and founded Walden Editions. He was awarded the Grand Prix de Poésie 2026. A memorial service is scheduled for 22 August at 10 a.m. in Paris.
