Christelle Familiari's Sculptures en forme at La Chapelle du Genêteil
Christelle Familiari's exhibition 'Sculptures en forme' at Centre d'art contemporain, La Chapelle du Genêteil in Château-Gontier (27 March – 6 June 2010) explores material metamorphosis. The show, resulting from a year-long residency, presents a vast composition requiring controlled visitor movement. Three long steel plates on the floor, referencing Carl Andre, force viewers to bend and follow a path. Seven 'Lustres Méduse' blown-glass chandeliers form a sloping curve, while a vertical curtain of paperclips creates a visual mesh. Sculptures range from tiny clay scraps to sophisticated design objects, made from everyday items like paperclips, wire spools, fabric, and magazine photos. Works from previous exhibitions ('Flasques', 'Trou noir') are recontextualized: 'Divers' leaves its pedestal to align with 'Secrétaire' and 'Sculptures fantasmées'. Familiari freezes fabric forms in cement, contrasts unequal masses, mixes glitter and pins with concrete, and juxtaposes rigid and organic materials. A porcelain fabric rests on a stainless steel support echoing a Möbius strip. A series of lithographs from a single matrix oscillate between excess and form dissolution. The artist tests material possibilities and questions sculpture's utilitarian potential.
