Chris Rain's Surreal Photographic Worlds
Born in 1984 in Rome, Chris Rain specializes in black-and-white photography that fuses elements of German Expressionist cinema with Surrealism, examining the interplay between the tangible and the fantastical. His four series—Glockenspiel Drama, I Am the Snow, Every Tree Is Broken, and Too Many Words (2006–2011)—depict monumental objects and animals suspended in mid-air, desolate landscapes, and forsaken structures. Utilizing techniques like long exposures, double exposures, and burning, Rain crafts ethereal, dreamlike scenes. His works often feature spectral human figures, expressions of melancholy, and everyday items (such as mirrors, typewriters, dominoes, and globes) reimagined. He was awarded the Renaissance Arts Prize, Premio Fotosintesi SiFest09, and Premio FotoLeggendo for best portfolio in Rome. In 2011, his art was displayed at Galerie du Crochetan in Monthey (September 16–November 3) and Musée de Bagnes in Le Châble (October 1–November 6) during Label'Art 2011, a contemporary art triennial in Valais.
