Chris Kraus's Complete Filmography Presented at Index Stockholm Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From June 1 to October 13, 2019, the Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation in Stockholm showcased 'Chris Kraus: FILMS BEFORE AND AFTER.' This exhibition included all nine of Chris Kraus's films created between 1982 and 1996, which were presented on monitors arranged on a wooden platform. The films varied in length from 5 to 30 minutes and featured titles such as 'Gravity & Grace' (1996), 'How to Shoot a Crime' (1987), 'Traveling at Night' (1991), and 'Sadness at Leaving' (1992). Additionally, seven of Kraus's books were exhibited alongside enlarged excerpts that explored her filmmaking. The installation juxtaposed the films' exploration of sex, gender, and politics, while most of the films can be accessed online through UbuWeb, making the exhibition a valuable archival showcase of Kraus's contributions.
